A New Member States (NMS) workshop, Slovenia 2007
The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, University of Ljubljana is organising a NMS workshop that will be held on Monday 8th of October 2007 in Slovenia and it is sponsored by 4M Network of Excellence. The workshop will provide the opportunity to debate the scientific and technological development in the field of materials and micro/nanotechnology, as well as forums for the exchange and dissemination of information between universities, research centres, SMEs, as well as opportunities to initiate new RTD projects.
Over the next four years, the Microsystems market, including Micro-Structure
Technologies (MST) and Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS), is predicted to grow at a
rate of 16% per year from $12 billion in 2004 to $25 billion in 2009 across a spectrum of
26 MEMS/MST products. In the field of micro-production, there is a gap between the
capabilities and resources of the NMS countries and other European countries. The mission
of the NMS workshop is to spread the advantages and possibilities of micro-technologies to
the NMS industry. Thus, to provide a suitable environment for development of
micro-technologies that will enable the introduction of new products and brought the
existing products towards the micro-scale resulting in the reduction of the production
costs. According to the situation in NMS industry, the latter could be even more
important.
The workshop will consist of two parts. In the first part, the invited speakers will give
lectures on microtechnologies. It is expected that the following issues are presented:
- the vantage ground of micro-production,
- state of the art,
- open challenges for the near future,
- R&D directions in European industry.
The NMS workshops will be closed by an open session where the industrial partners will have opportunity present their problems related with the miniaturization of the products. The discussion about possible solutions among the participants will be encouraged.
